THE ORIGIN OF MITHI

- IPSHITA KARMAKAR

In this artwork created for 'Confluence' a virtual exhibition by Mumbai Water Narratives and Living Waters Museum, the oral histories of Mithi River was illustrated.

The Mithi River has been an iconic part of the lives and existence of many a Mumbaikar. It has existed quietly in the backgrounds of our lives, only perhaps expressing its angst at years of mistreatment by flooding every monsoon. In this map, stories about the Mithi River, forgotten, untold, unheard – have been expressed through characters inhabiting the river – the fiddler crab, the BMC fumigation authorities, the volunteers who clean the Mithi.

Hopes, regrets, and histories mingle to tell the story of the biggest character of Mumbai’s history – The Mithi River.
